ACADEMICS

21C Classrooms Initative

In January 2007, the Amphi Foundation, through a generous grant from BHP Copper Inc., launched the 21C Classroom Technology Initiative to provide Amphi students and teachers with durable classroom technologies, beginning with SMART Boards. In classrooms with only one or two computers, the SMART Board's touch-screen technology and integration of Internet access extends personal computing to every student.

Thanks to the Foundation’s 21st Century Classrooms Initiative and other grants, half of the classrooms in the Amphitheater Public Schools are now equipped with SMART Boards. There is much work to be done, though, in order to ensure that the remaining 50% of classrooms also get the technology that they need.

MathPLUS+

The program, which involves more than 100 volunteer tutors, began four years ago through Saddlebrooke Community Services and became affiliated with the Amphi Foundation in 2008. MathPLUS+ involves computer-aided tutoring that is integrated with math teaching in the classroom and is aligned to state standards. This personalized approach to math tutoring has impressive results with the number of students achieving the “exceeds” level on the AIMS test increasing each year.

As an in-classroom program, teachers have the option to participate and invite tutors to help their students.

To become a volunteer MathPLUS+ tutor, contact the Amphi Foundation at 520-696-5147.

HEALTH

Prescription drug assistance

We will help pay for prescription drugs and medical supplies that are not covered by a student's health insurance or other program.

If you need assistance or know of a student who does, please contact his or her school nurse, or Sandi Wheeler, Amphi's Director of Health Services, at 520-696-5728

FITNESS

Vouchers for sports physicals

Our voucher program pays the first $25.00 of the cost of sports physicals that are not covered by a student's health insurance or other program. On request of the student's school nurse or guidance counselor, we send the voucher to the school to be given to the student or parent. The student's family is responsible for scheduling the doctor's appointment and presents the voucher to the health care provider at the time of check in. The provider will then bill the Amphi Foundation for $25.00 and the student's family for the balance of the cost of the physical.

Vouchers are honored by the following health care providers:

Concentra Medical Center
Keeling Health Services
St. Elizabeth's of Hungary

Athletic fee waivers

For the past eight years, funding from the Tucson Conquistadors---more than $13,500 in 2008---has enabled Amphi's Interscholastics Department to waive athletic fees for Amphi middle and high school students in need.

According to the department's 2006 - '07 year-end report, the Conquistadors' generosity provided waivers for 815 middle school and 52 high school athletes, and allowed schools to extend their program offerings and their budgets to purchase uniforms and safety equipment.
